Well, this pretty much summarized my first little while here. (photo credit: Valerie Popper Anderson at Giving River Images, yes, I asked :)) I used the upper route through Wyoming and Nebraska because my poor little Prius about had a heart attack just driving from Medford to Utah and I didn't think there was any way it would make it through the mountains of Colorado. I had stuffed every nook and cranny with oh-so-important necessities, thrilled that I could take so much, but unfortunately I totally forgot about how much all that stuff might weigh. I took a couple of days to drive out here, and from the first had to modify my route because of flooding. So much rain! When I got to the outskirts of Omaha where G. maps told me to take a certain road down to Independence, the exit was blocked off and police officers were camped out there. I figured Google would figure it out, but after looping back around a couple of times, I decided to take matters into my own hands and follow the "detour" signs. That seemed to at least get me out of the loops, and after a while, G. maps even came through with another route.
It followed really small but pretty roads, and on one part there were banks of dirt on both sides of the road holding back the water from the flooded fields beyond, but I finally made it though. (These are some of the flooded fields I went by later. That's a couple flooded farm buildings in the middle of the field).
This is the Missouri River in flood. So many of the freeway exits even now say "Road Closed", and detour signs are everywhere. The first week or so there were big crashing thunder and lightning storms and rain that came down so hard it was like taking a shower.
I now live at the "Mansion" .....
.......apartments (the offices are in the old Plantation Mansion home and there are a bunch of apartment buildings actually called the "Mansion Apartments").
This is where I really live :).Our apartment is the upper balcony you can see. It's a really nice place, and I'll give you a tour sometime. The grounds are beautiful, and there are lots of squirrels and bunnies.
I'll try to get another letter out soon to let you know what I have been doing. Actually, most of the time I'm desperately trying to learn Spanish so I'm not totally lost, but I still have a long way to go. Looking for that Miracle!
Until next time,
Hermana Kim
